What we know from Hamas and Israel is if provoked, Netanyahu does not back down. Negotiations – at first at least – are generally not a compromise. My inkling is US stays away until the point of no return. In the meantime, carrying a big stick, moving ships nearby, meeting and talking and even speaking openly about control and intelligence is part of the process.
