Japan Hayashi: Japan won’t do anything to sacrifice agriculture sector in U.S. trade talks | Forexlive
Japan Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi:
- Japan won’t do anything to sacrifice agriculture sector in U.S. trade talks
Earlier, Japan farm minister Koizumi:
- will continue to work with various ministries towards maximising Japan’s national interests in the context of trade negotiations with U.S.
Japan Econ Minister Akazawa:
- won’t comment on whether rice is part of U.S. tariff talks
- still exploring if possible to reach trade agreement
The comments come in response to Trump complaining that Japan was not importing American rice:
Japan has an 770,000-ton tariff-free import quota for rice, of which up to 100,000 tons is for staple rice. Beyond this, rice imports are subject to a levy of 341 yen ($2.37) per kilogramme.
