The issue now is that even if he returns with an agreement from Washington, he may not get the backing of lawmakers after the latest election result. That especially if he ends up offering up concessions after having talked up such a tough game in the past few months. As such, he is very much put in between a rock and a hard place at the moment.
The current predicament raises the odds of Japan not being able to strike a deal by 1 August. The question then becomes, is Trump really going to follow through to increase tariffs to 25%?
