Trump says he is open to further tariff discussions with Canada | investingLive

Trump said that his administration’s newly imposed tariffs are progressing “very well, very smooth,” and signaled openness to further trade talks — including with Canada.

Speaking to NBC News, Trump revealed he may speak with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney later in the evening. His remarks come just hours after signing an executive order that raises tariffs on Canadian goods to 35% from 25%, targeting all products not covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

While the tariff escalation adds fresh pressure to bilateral relations, Trump’s comments suggest room remains for diplomacy. “I’m open to discussions,” he said, indicating that a conversation with Carney could take place Thursday night.

The tariff hike is part of a broader effort by the White House to push for what it views as “fairer” trade terms with major partners, though critics warn the move risks disrupting supply chains and straining economic ties across North America.
