‘Not an Accurate Description’: MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Interrupts Reporter For Uttering Word ‘Pro-Life,’ Sparking Awkward Silence

An awkward on-air moment unfolded Thursday just moments after NBC News reporter Garrett Haake used the term “pro-life” while quoting a Republican congresswoman.

Haake was explaining why Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) voted for Republicans’ abortion legislation the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act and a resolution castigating assaults on pro-life pregnancy centers and churches in the post-Roe era despite having some reservations.

He said Mace described herself as believing in protecting the unborn and called herself “pro-life.”

“She felt it was important to vote for these measures despite their potentially politically damaging or politically unappealing appearance, if you will,” Haake said.

But MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell seemingly took issue with this framing and jumped in to issue a correction.

“Let me just interrupt and say that ‘pro-life’ is a term that they, an entire group, wants to use,” Mitchell said. “But that is not an accurate description.”

Haake responded by noting he used the term because it’s the word Mace “used to describe herself.” From there, Mitchell said, “I understand.”

But a few seconds of awkward silence followed the exchange. Watch it unfold:

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act was passed in the GOP-dominated House Thursday and, as CBN News reported, the bill requires healthcare workers to give life-saving medical care to any child who survives an abortion.

The act passed 220-210, with all 210 “no” votes coming from the Democratic side.
